Time Crisis
Time Crisis is a 1995 light-gun arcade game developed by Namco, and it revolutionized the genre with its signature cover mechanic. Players use a dedicated foot pedal to duck behind cover and pop out to shoot.
Aiming a light gun at the screen, you blast waves of enemies against a strict, constantly ticking time limit, using the pedal to hide, reload safely, and avoid incoming fire, which added a tense tactical rhythm entirely absent from static shooting galleries. Extending the timer by clearing enemies, spotting dangerous red-clad foes, and cinematic action sequences gave it a distinct hook and made it a defining arcade hit that spawned a long-running series of sequels and spin-offs.
It was widely ported to home consoles bundled with light-gun peripherals like the GunCon, and the series remained an arcade staple for years afterward.
