PaRappa the Rapper is a 1996 rhythm game developed by NanaOn-Sha for the PlayStation, and it is widely credited as a pioneer that helped launch the modern music-game genre. Players help an eager rapping dog win love, courage, and confidence.
Gameplay has you press buttons in precise time with prompts to echo and, at higher skill, freestyle over rap verses across a series of quirky, comic stages led by eccentric teachers, aiming to keep the beat and rise from "Cool" to top ratings. Its flat, paper-thin 2D characters set against 3D backdrops, endlessly catchy songs, and offbeat sense of humor gave it an instantly recognizable charm.
