Virtua Cop
Virtua Cop is a 1994 rail shooter developed by Sega AM2, a light-gun arcade game that brought polygonal 3D graphics to the on-rails shooting genre on Sega's Model 2 hardware. Players took the roles of officers gunning down criminals through banks, warehouses, docks and city streets.
The game introduced a targeting system that displayed an approaching color-coded reticle to warn of an enemy's incoming shot, and it rewarded accuracy and headshots while penalizing hitting innocent bystanders. Branching paths, reactive enemies who reeled and stumbled based on where they were hit, and destructible on-screen details helped modernize the light-gun shooter and influenced many that followed, including Sega's own later efforts.
Virtua Cop launched a series and helped establish the template for 3D arcade shooters, and it has appeared in later Sega compilations, giving players a chance to revisit an important step in the genre's evolution.
