Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos is a 2002 real-time strategy game developed by Blizzard Entertainment, expanding the Warcraft universe with four fully playable factions: the Human Alliance, the Orcish Horde, the Undead Scourge, and the Night Elves.
It introduced powerful hero units that gain experience, levels, and special abilities across battles and can equip items, shifting the genre toward smaller, more tactical engagements, while a system of neutral creeps guarding resources and an upkeep mechanic that penalizes overly large armies rewarded careful map control over pure mass production. Its cinematic, character-driven campaign advanced the Warcraft story dramatically and introduced figures who would become central to the franchise, and a powerful World Editor let players build custom scenarios.
Beyond its own commercial and critical success, that editor gave rise to enormously influential community creations, most famously a defense-of-the-ancients custom map that seeded the entire MOBA genre. The game remains influential, and a modernized reforged version has been released, keeping the classic accessible on current hardware.
