Call of Duty
Also known as Call of Duty 1
Call of Duty is a 2003 first-person shooter developed by Infinity Ward, a studio formed by veterans of the Medal of Honor series, and the debut of what would become one of gaming's biggest franchises. Set in World War II, it puts players in the boots of American, British, and Soviet soldiers across the war's pivotal campaigns, including the assault on Stalingrad.
The game distinguished itself from rivals by emphasizing the chaos of squad-based combat, surrounding the player with allied soldiers who fought and gave orders alongside them rather than sending a lone hero into battle. Scripted, movie-like set pieces and effects such as smoke, artillery, and a pounding heartbeat under fire conveyed the intensity of war and raised the bar for storytelling in the shooter genre.
Call of Duty launched a franchise that would grow into an annual commercial juggernaut spanning historical and modern settings. The original remains available through digital storefronts as the humble beginning of a gaming empire.
