Crysis
Crysis is a 2007 first-person shooter developed by Crytek, legendary for its cutting-edge visuals that pushed personal computers far beyond their limits at launch. Players don a high-tech Nanosuit as a US special forces soldier confronting a North Korean force and, later, an ancient alien threat on a tropical island.
The game's Nanosuit granted switchable powers of enhanced strength, speed, armor, and cloaking, encouraging players to experiment and approach its large, open combat sandboxes however they chose, from stealthy infiltration to all-out assault. Combined with jaw-dropping graphics, dynamic lighting, and highly destructible environments where buildings and vegetation could be torn apart, it became the benchmark that new hardware was measured against for years to come.
Crysis famously gave rise to the enduring internet question of whether a given machine could even run it. It was later remastered for modern platforms and consoles, letting new players experience its still-impressive spectacle and open-ended combat.
