F.E.A.R.
Also known as FEAR
F.E.A.R. is a 2005 first-person shooter developed by Monolith Productions, blending intense gunplay with atmospheric psychological horror. Players join an elite First Encounter Assault Recon squad investigating a paranormal threat centered on a terrifying young girl named Alma and a rogue commander controlling a clone army.
The game is best remembered for its exceptional enemy artificial intelligence, as soldiers flanked, took cover, blind-fired, and called out coordinated tactics in ways that felt startlingly lifelike and are still cited as a genre high point. Paired with a slow-motion reflex ability that let players dodge and return fire amid showers of sparks, debris, and drifting smoke, it delivered some of the most visceral and satisfying shooting of its era, punctuated by genuinely unsettling horror interludes and disturbing visions.
F.E.A.R. earned strong acclaim and spawned sequels and expansions. The original remains available on digital storefronts, still praised for combat artificial intelligence that many later games have yet to match.
