Dead Space is a 2008 third-person shooter developed by EA Redwood Shores, following engineer Isaac Clarke aboard the USG Ishimura, a mining ship overrun by grotesque reanimated corpses called Necromorphs. It fused survival horror tension with over-the-shoulder action combat in a claustrophobic sci-fi setting.

Its standout mechanic was "strategic dismemberment," which required players to sever enemies' limbs with industrial tools like the Plasma Cutter rather than aim for the head. A telekinesis ability and a slowing stasis module added puzzle and combat options, while an inventive diegetic interface projected Isaac's health, inventory and menus directly into the game world with no traditional HUD. The oppressive atmosphere and superb sound design made every corridor feel dangerous.

Dead Space became a modern horror landmark and spawned sequels that expanded its universe, and its influence endures across the genre. A ground-up remake released years later rebuilt the original vision with modern technology, introducing it to a new generation.
