The game's standout innovation was the AI Director, a system that dynamically adjusted enemy placement, item and weapon drops, music, and pacing in response to how well the players were doing, ensuring each playthrough felt tense and unpredictable rather than scripted. Special infected with unique abilities, such as the Smoker, Boomer, Hunter, and Tank, forced players to stick close together and coordinate, making genuine cooperation essential to survival, while a Versus mode let a second team control the infected.
