S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is a 2007 first-person shooter developed by the Ukrainian studio GSC Game World, an atmospheric survival shooter set in an alternate irradiated Zone around the Chernobyl disaster site after a fictional second catastrophe. Players take the role of an amnesiac scavenger known as the Marked One, fighting to survive and uncover the Zone's secrets.

The game blended shooting with role-playing and survival elements, featuring a large semi-open world of distinct zones, harsh management of ammunition, food, and radiation, and deadly anomalies, mutated creatures, and rival factions of stalkers. Its A-Life system aimed to simulate the lives and movements of non-player characters and creatures independently of the player, creating an oppressive atmosphere and emergent, unpredictable encounters that earned a devoted cult following, alongside multiple possible endings.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. spawned prequels, a sequel, and an enormous modding community that continues to expand and overhaul it. The original remains available on digital storefronts, still regarded as a landmark of atmospheric survival gaming.
