Quake II
Quake II is a 1997 first-person shooter developed by id Software. Though named as a sequel, it tells an unrelated story in which a lone marine, part of a failed invasion, crash-lands on Stroggos, the homeworld of the cybernetic Strogg, and fights to dismantle their war machine and cripple their leadership from within.
The game advanced its predecessor's technology with colored lighting, more detailed textured environments, and a hub-based mission structure that linked levels into a continuous campaign built around objectives rather than isolated stages. Its polished single-player, its highly influential multiplayer, and especially the open, well-documented id Tech 2 engine spurred a thriving modding and mapping scene and helped make it a defining shooter of the late 1990s and a benchmark for the genre.
Quake II remains available through digital storefronts, and a modern enhanced edition later added updated visuals, restored expansions, and new content while preserving the original fast-paced action.
