Seven Kingdoms
Seven Kingdoms is a 1997 real-time strategy game developed by Enlight Software and designed by Trevor Chan. Players lead one of several nations to dominance through a mix of military conquest, economic development, diplomacy, and espionage across a persistent map populated by independent villages that can be won over or conquered.
The game distinguished itself with unusually deep systems for its era: spies could be trained and sent to infiltrate rival kingdoms, sow unrest, or assassinate leaders; loyalty and grievances among a population affected productivity and the risk of rebellion; and trade, tribute, and formal diplomacy mattered as much as armies. This breadth of strategic options gave it a richness that set it apart from more combat-focused contemporaries.
Seven Kingdoms was later released with its source code opened to the community, helping keep it playable on modern systems, and it spawned sequels that expanded on its multifaceted strategy.
