TimeSplitters
TimeSplitters is a 2000 first-person shooter developed by Free Radical Design, a launch-era console shooter created by former members of the Rare team behind GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark. It races players through wildly different time periods in fast, arcade-style action against the time-travelling TimeSplitters.
The game emphasized frantic, split-screen multiplayer and a challenge-driven single-player mode in which each level, spanning eras from 1935 to the far future, tasked players with retrieving an artifact under a time limit. Its irreverent humour, a huge and eclectic roster of unlockable playable characters, and a robust map editor that let players build and share their own levels made it a standout party shooter of its time, prioritizing fun over realism.
TimeSplitters spawned two sequels that further refined its formula and expanded its beloved multiplayer and creation tools, growing a devoted fanbase. The original remains fondly remembered as a spirited, creative shooter from a celebrated studio.
