Another World
Another World is a 1991 cinematic platformer developed by Delphine Software, created almost single-handedly by Eric Chahi and released in North America as Out of This World. It follows physicist Lester Chaykin, teleported by a particle-accelerator accident into a hostile alien world, where he must run, jump, use an energy pistol, and solve environmental puzzles to survive alongside an alien captive who becomes his ally.
Distinguished by its striking rotoscoped-style animation, minimalist storytelling told entirely without on-screen dialogue or a HUD, and cinematic use of flat-shaded polygonal graphics, it delivered a uniquely atmospheric and immersive experience. Its unforgiving trial-and-error challenge, memorable set pieces, and elegant, wordless presentation made it a landmark of interactive storytelling far ahead of its time.
Another World has been re-released in anniversary editions across many modern platforms, and its influence on cinematic and narrative-driven games, including the later Flashback, ensures its status as an enduring artistic classic.
