Spyro the Dragon
Spyro the Dragon is a 1998 platformer developed by Insomniac Games for the PlayStation. Players control a small purple dragon who charges, breathes fire and glides through colorful open worlds, freeing fellow dragons trapped in crystal and collecting scattered gems to stop the villain Gnasty Gnorc.
The game stood out for its bright, expansive levels and smooth, exploration-focused platforming, using clever level-streaming technology to render sprawling worlds with impressive draw distances for the hardware. Collecting gems, dragon eggs and freeing every dragon rewarded thorough exploration, while a loyal dragonfly companion served as a health meter and hub worlds connected the varied stages.
