Ninja Gaiden
Ninja Gaiden is a 1988 action-platformer developed by Tecmo for the Nintendo Entertainment System, following the ninja Ryu Hayabusa on a globe-spanning quest to avenge his father. Players run, jump, and slash through side-scrolling stages, clinging to walls and unleashing special ninpo techniques against relentless waves of enemies.
The game is remembered as much for its punishing difficulty as for its cinematic storytelling. Between stages, detailed cutscenes advanced a dramatic plot, a rare touch for the era that helped set a new standard for narrative presentation on home consoles. Enemies respawned aggressively when scrolled off screen, and a single fall or hit could undo careful progress, forcing players to memorize each stage. Its tight controls and unforgiving level design made completion a genuine badge of honor.
Ninja Gaiden launched a franchise that later reinvented itself as a fast, brutal 3D action series in the 2000s. The original trilogy has appeared in various retro compilations and on classic-game subscription services, so newcomers can still experience its steep but rewarding challenge today.
