Psychonauts

2005 Double Fine Productions Platformer Updated 25 Jul 2026

Psychonauts is a 2005 platformer developed by Double Fine Productions under designer Tim Schafer, a witty, imaginative game about Razputin, a runaway circus boy with psychic powers who sneaks into a government summer camp for young psychics.

The core conceit sends Raz diving into other characters' minds, each rendered as a surreal, thematically distinct level that reflects that person's personality, fears, and neuroses, from a paranoid conspiracy-theorist's neighborhood to a giant board game and a stage inside a troubled patient's psyche. Combined with sharp, genuinely funny writing, memorable characters, collectible-driven progression, and inventive platforming and psychic-power combat, this gave the game a creative identity few titles matched.

A commercial underperformer at launch despite strong reviews, it earned enduring critical acclaim and a passionate fan base whose support eventually helped a crowdfunded and studio-backed sequel come to fruition years later. It has been re-released on numerous modern platforms, so this beloved cult classic is now easy to play.
