Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a 1992 platformer developed by Sonic Team for the Sega Genesis, refining the speed-driven formula of its predecessor. It introduced Tails, Sonic's two-tailed fox companion, who could be controlled by a second player or tag along automatically.
The game emphasized momentum and flow, sending Sonic rocketing through loops, springs, and corkscrews across brightly themed zones like Chemical Plant and Casino Night. A new spin-dash move let players build speed from a standstill, solving a pacing problem from the first game, and special stages rendered in a pseudo-3D half-pipe offered chances to collect Chaos Emeralds and become the invincible Super Sonic.
A massive commercial hit, it became one of the best-selling Genesis titles and helped define Sega's brand identity during the console wars with Nintendo. The game is widely available through compilations and classic-game services, where its fast, colorful platforming still delivers a thrill.
