Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a 1994 platformer developed by Sonic Team for the Sega Genesis, expanding the series with new abilities, a save feature, and a stronger narrative thread. It introduced the rival character Knuckles, who set traps and interfered with Sonic's progress throughout the adventure.
The game gave Sonic elemental shields granting powers like a flame dash, a bubble bounce, and a high double jump, adding meaningful variety to the familiar high-speed platforming. Its levels flowed into one another with cinematic transitions, and battery-backed saving let players preserve their progress across long play sessions for the first time in the series.
Designed alongside a follow-up that could be physically combined with it via a lock-on cartridge for an even larger experience, the game is a cornerstone of the classic Sonic era. It appears in numerous compilations and on classic-game services, keeping its energetic action accessible today.
