Super Mario Land

1989 Nintendo R&D1 Handheld platformer Updated 25 Jul 2026

Super Mario Land is a 1989 handheld platformer developed by Nintendo R&D1, a launch title for the original Game Boy. Mario ventures through the unfamiliar Sarasaland to rescue Princess Daisy from the alien invader Tatanga across four distinct, exotic kingdoms.

Built by a team apart from the mainline series and led by Gunpei Yokoi, it had a quirky identity, featuring smaller sprites, unfamiliar enemies, and even two auto-scrolling shoot-em-up style stages where Mario piloted a submarine and an airplane firing at foes. Its catchy, memorable soundtrack, coin-collecting bonus rooms and brisk, compact levels made it a compelling early portable game despite its short length.

Super Mario Land helped drive the Game Boy's enormous early success and introduced Princess Daisy to the franchise. It has been re-released on later handheld and download services, and remains a charming, distinctive curiosity from Mario's formative portable days.
