Beneath a Steel Sky
Beneath a Steel Sky is a 1994 adventure game developed by Revolution Software. Set in a dystopian future Australia, it follows Robert Foster, a man raised in the outback who is captured and taken to the oppressive, class-divided Union City, where he must uncover the truth about his past and the corporation that rules the metropolis, aided by a wisecracking robot companion named Joey.
Powered by Revolution's Virtual Theatre engine, the game featured characters who went about their own routines independently of the player, lending the world a sense of life. It was praised for its cyberpunk atmosphere, sharp writing, and comic-book art contributed by Dave Gibbons of Watchmen fame, which also framed the game's introductory sequence. Its blend of humor and social commentary, along with an intuitive interface, made it a standout of the British adventure scene.
The rights holders later released the game as freeware, and it remains widely available for free on modern systems, with a sequel arriving decades later to continue Foster's story.
