The Longest Journey
The Longest Journey is a 1999 adventure game developed by Funcom. Players guide April Ryan, an eighteen-year-old art student who discovers she is a Shifter, able to travel between two parallel worlds: the technological Stark and the magical Arcadia. As the ancient balance between the two realms falters, April is drawn into a sweeping quest to restore it and confront the forces threatening both.
The traditional point-and-click gameplay emphasizes conversation, exploration, and inventory puzzles across richly detailed, hand-crafted 2D environments layered over 3D characters. The game was celebrated for its expansive, emotionally resonant narrative, its strong and relatable central character, and its willingness to tackle themes of identity and destiny. Arriving late in the classic adventure era, it proved the genre could still deliver ambitious, deeply written stories, and it earned a lasting reputation as one of the finest adventures ever made.
Its story continued in a direct sequel, Dreamfall, and a later episodic follow-up, and the original is readily available through digital storefronts supporting modern operating systems.
