Dragon Age: Origins is a 2009 role-playing game developed by BioWare, conceived as a spiritual successor to the classic Baldur's Gate. Set in the dark fantasy world of Thedas, players become a Grey Warden fighting to unite fractured kingdoms against an invasion of monstrous Darkspawn led by an Archdemon.

The game offered six distinct origin stories, tied to the player's race and class, that changed how the adventure began and how characters reacted to the hero along the way. Its tactical party-based combat could be paused at any moment to issue precise commands, and a companion approval system meant choices could deepen bonds or provoke betrayal. Deep moral decisions, such as the fateful ritual at the story's climax, earned it strong acclaim as a throwback to old-school computer role-playing depth.

It launched a long-running franchise that has continued to evolve its combat and storytelling across multiple sequels. The original remains widely available through digital platforms, still regarded by many fans as the high point of the series.
