Eye of the Beholder
Eye of the Beholder is a 1991 role-playing game developed by Westwood Associates, a first-person dungeon crawler based on the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules. Players guide a party into the sewers and dungeons beneath the city of Waterdeep to confront an evil lurking below.
The game used a grid-based movement system viewed from first person, with real-time combat, spellcasting drawn from the tabletop spell lists, and puzzle-solving that required careful mapping, item use, and management of the four-character party. Its atmospheric visuals, click-driven interface, and faithful adaptation of the rules made it a favorite among fantasy fans and a benchmark for the licensed crawler.
A commercial and critical success, it helped popularize the licensed dungeon-crawler on personal computers and spawned two sequels. The original remains available through digital storefronts, often bundled with its follow-ups, preserving its classic party-based dungeon exploration for a new generation of adventurers.
