Final Fantasy IX

Final Fantasy IX is a 2000 JRPG developed by Square for the original PlayStation, a deliberate return to the series' medieval fantasy roots after more futuristic entries. It follows the good-natured thief Zidane and a colorful cast caught up in a war, and ultimately a deeper threat to the very existence of their world.

The game embraces classic elements: four-character turn-based battles with an active-time system, an overworld traversed by chocobo and airship, and a whimsical yet ultimately poignant tone with darker themes of mortality and identity. Characters learn abilities from equipped gear, the mini-game Tetra Master offers a card-collecting diversion, and the ensemble, led by the endearing Zidane and the anxious black mage Vivi, is among the series' most cherished.

Often cited as a heartfelt tribute to what came before, and reportedly a favorite of its own creator, it remains a fan favorite. An enhanced version with visual and quality-of-life upgrades has been released on modern platforms, letting new players enjoy this beloved classic easily.
