God of War

God of War is a 2005 hack and slash developed by Santa Monica Studio for the PlayStation 2, following the vengeful Spartan warrior Kratos as he serves the Greek gods and hunts Ares in a bid to be freed from the nightmares of his past.

The game is known for its brutal, fluid combat centered on the chained Blades of Chaos, cinematic set-piece battles against enormous mythological creatures like the Hydra, environmental puzzles, and context-sensitive quick-time finishing moves that reward players with dramatic on-screen kills. A strong sense of scale, dark tone, and a magic and upgrade system gave it a distinctive, spectacle-driven identity that pushed the aging hardware to its limits.

A commercial and critical hit, it launched a major franchise and became emblematic of the PlayStation 2 era's cinematic action games. The original and its sequels have been remastered for later hardware, and the series was later reinvented with a Norse setting and over-the-shoulder camera on modern consoles to renewed acclaim.
