inFamous
inFamous is a 2009 action game developed by Sucker Punch Productions, casting players as Cole MacGrath, a bike messenger who gains electrical superpowers after a mysterious explosion devastates Empire City and plunges it into quarantine. It combined open-world traversal with a branching morality system.
Players scaled buildings, ground along rails and power lines, and unleashed increasingly powerful electric attacks, drawing energy from the city's grid to recharge, while choosing between heroic and ruthless paths. Karma decisions altered Cole's abilities, unlockable powers, story beats and how citizens reacted to him, encouraging replays. The fluid climbing and electricity-themed combat turned the city itself into a playground.
inFamous helped define the superhero open-world subgenre on PlayStation 3 and launched a well-regarded series with several sequels and spin-offs, each exploring different powers. The original remains available digitally and is still an enjoyable, energetic take on discovering and shaping what kind of superhuman to become.
