Devil May Cry
Also known as DMC
Devil May Cry is a 2001 hack and slash developed by Capcom, a stylish action game that began life as an early Resident Evil 4 prototype before its combat and tone pushed it into becoming its own franchise. It stars the cocky demon hunter Dante as he battles hordes of monsters across a gothic castle and island.
The game emphasized fluid, combo-driven combat that rewarded aggression and variety, letting players juggle enemies by mixing sword strikes with dual-pistol gunfire, and it graded performance with a real-time stylish-rank meter that climbed from D up to S. Its fast pace, demanding challenge, keeping enemies airborne, and swaggering protagonist established a new template for the character-action genre.
Devil May Cry launched a long-running and highly influential series, and its ideas shaped many later action games. The original has appeared in modern collections and re-releases, keeping its stylish combat accessible to players today.
