Neverwinter Nights
Also known as NWN
Neverwinter Nights is a 2002 role-playing game developed by BioWare, built on the third-edition Dungeons & Dragons ruleset and designed as much for its player-facing creation tools as for its official single-player campaign.
Players create a hero and adventure through a story of a devastating plague and political intrigue in and around the city of Neverwinter, joined by a single hireable henchman, using pausable real-time combat grounded faithfully in D&D mechanics and character classes. Its defining feature, however, was the powerful Aurora toolset paired with a live Dungeon Master client, which let players build entire custom modules and host persistent online worlds where a human game master could control monsters, spawn events, and guide players in real time.
That toolkit fostered a remarkably long-lived, creative community that produced fan-made campaigns and persistent servers for many years, alongside official expansions. An enhanced edition has been released for modern platforms, preserving both the campaigns and the game's enduring legacy of player-driven creativity.
