Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is a 1997 platformer developed by Oddworld Inhabitants, a cinematic puzzle-platformer with a distinctive dark comic tone and a pointed environmental and social message. Players control Abe, a lowly Mudokon floor-waxer at the RuptureFarms meat-processing plant who discovers his species is next on the menu.
The game blended stealth, careful puzzle-solving and precise platforming across atmospheric, pre-rendered environments, and featured a unique GameSpeak system that let Abe issue voice commands, greetings and orders to guide fellow captives through portals to safety. Its hand-crafted world, possession mechanic and unforgiving trial-and-error design, tracked by a running count of how many Mudokons you saved, gave it a memorable, singular identity.
