Phantasmagoria
Phantasmagoria is a 1995 adventure game developed by Sierra On-Line. Created by Roberta Williams, it follows author Adrienne Delaney, who moves into a remote New England mansion with her photographer husband only to unleash a malevolent supernatural force tied to the estate's murderous former occupant, a stage magician.
Spanning seven discs, the game was notable for its heavy use of full-motion video, filming live actors against hundreds of rendered backgrounds and stitching them into a chapter-based structure. Its puzzles were relatively light, keeping the focus on the unfolding horror story, but its graphic violence and a disturbing assault scene stirred controversy, led some retailers to restrict its sale, and prompted an optional content lock. As one of the highest-profile interactive-movie titles of its day, it became a major commercial success and a lightning rod in debates about violence in games.
