Pokémon Gold and Silver is a 1999 handheld RPG developed by Game Freak, the second generation of the phenomenally popular monster-collecting series for the Game Boy. Players journey through the new Johto region, catching, training and battling creatures to become the Pokemon League champion.
The games expanded the formula considerably with a real-time day-and-night cycle affecting which Pokemon appeared, two new elemental types, breeding to produce eggs, held items and roughly a hundred new Pokemon. A celebrated late-game surprise let players cross over and re-explore the original Kanto region from the first games, effectively doubling the size of the adventure and adding its gym leaders.
Gold and Silver are frequently cited among the best entries in the series for their generosity, polish and ambition. They have been re-released on later handheld download services and reimagined in full remakes years later, keeping the Johto journey accessible to new trainers.
