Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny
Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny is a 1992 role-playing game developed by Attic Entertainment Software. Based on the German pen-and-paper system Das Schwarze Auge (The Dark Eye), it sends a party of adventurers across the northern lands of Aventuria to unite feuding dwarves and gather the pieces of a legendary sword to thwart an orc invasion.
The game was known for its intricate simulation, faithfully translating the tabletop rules into a system that tracked hunger, thirst, illness, weather, and equipment wear alongside deep character creation across many attributes and talents. Turn-based tactical battles played out on gridded maps, and travel demanded careful management of provisions and rest. This demanding realism set it apart from lighter contemporaries and made it a cornerstone of the German RPG tradition, spawning two sequels, Star Trail and Shadows over Riva, that completed the Blade of Destiny trilogy.
Modern players can find the original through classic-game digital storefronts, and a later remake revisited the adventure with updated visuals for contemporary hardware.
