Riven: The Sequel to Myst
Riven: The Sequel to Myst is a 1997 adventure game developed by Cyan. Continuing the story of Myst, it strands the player on a fractured cluster of islands, tasked with freeing a woman named Catherine and unmasking the schemes of the imprisoned tyrant Gehn while solving puzzles woven directly into the world's machinery and culture.
Spanning five discs, Riven was renowned for its lush pre-rendered visuals, its immersive first-person node-based navigation, and its almost wordless environmental storytelling, in which players deduced the logic of an alien society, including its numbering system, from careful observation alone. The absence of an inventory or on-screen text placed all the emphasis on exploration and reasoning. Its production values and atmosphere pushed the boundaries of the medium, and many still regard it as the high point of the Myst series.
A full remake later rebuilt the game in real-time 3D, and the original continues to be available through digital re-release platforms for modern computers.
