The 7th Guest
The 7th Guest is a 1993 adventure game developed by Trilobyte. Players explore the abandoned mansion of sinister toymaker Henry Stauf, piecing together the fate of six guests he invited for a deadly night through a series of logic puzzles and eerie, ghostly visions rendered in pre-rendered 3D and interspersed with live-action full-motion video.
The game was a landmark CD-ROM title, spanning two discs and using the format's capacity to deliver detailed 3D environments and video that helped drive the adoption of CD drives in home PCs. Its gameplay centered on standalone brain-teasers scattered throughout the house rather than traditional inventory puzzles, wrapped in an atmosphere of supernatural horror. Bill Gates famously cited it as a showcase for multimedia computing, and its commercial success made it one of the defining titles of the early CD-ROM boom.
It remains available through digital storefronts, with a later sequel, The 11th Hour, and a subsequent revival continuing the Stauf mystery for new audiences.
