Simon the Sorcerer
Simon the Sorcerer is a 1993 adventure game developed by Adventure Soft. It stars Simon, a sarcastic boy pulled into a fantasy world through a magic portal in an old wizard's book, where he reluctantly takes up the role of a wizard to rescue the kidnapped magician Calypso from the evil sorcerer Sordid.
Presented with detailed hand-drawn backgrounds and a point-and-click interface, the game charmed players with its parody of classic fantasy tropes, its abundance of jokes, and its many pop-culture and fairy-tale references, from Rapunzel to a swamp-dwelling troll guarding a bridge. The CD-ROM release added voice acting, with Chris Barrie of Red Dwarf voicing Simon in the series. Its irreverent British humor and likable, snarky protagonist made it a favorite of the European point-and-click scene and spawned a long-running series of sequels.
