The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind

2002 Bethesda Game Studios Role-playing Updated 25 Jul 2026

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is a 2002 role-playing game developed by Bethesda Game Studios, an open-world adventure set on the strange volcanic island of Vvardenfell, where the player arrives as a prisoner secretly bound up in an ancient prophecy about a returning hero.

The game is renowned for its freedom: players can go almost anywhere from the start, join numerous competing factions such as guilds and great houses, and pursue the main quest at their own pace within a richly detailed and genuinely alien world of towering mushrooms, ash storms, and dense original lore. Its skill-based progression rewards using abilities to improve them, magic like levitation enables unusual traversal, and largely hand-placed content and written directions, rather than quest markers, reward careful reading and real exploration.

A landmark that brought the series to a much wider audience and shipped with construction tools that fueled modding, it remains hugely influential and beloved. It is available on modern platforms and supported by an enormous, still-active modding community, keeping it vibrant today.
