Hitman: Codename 47 is a 2000 stealth game developed by IO Interactive, introducing Agent 47, a bald, barcoded assassin created through genetic engineering, as he carries out contracts across Hong Kong, Colombia, Budapest and Rotterdam that gradually reveal the truth about his origins. It launched one of stealth gaming's most enduring characters.
The game emphasized disguise and planning, letting players don enemy uniforms, blend into environments and eliminate targets through improvisation, from silent fiber-wire strangulation to staged accidents. Though demanding, with limited saves and unforgiving AI, it established the sandbox-assassination concept the series would perfect, rewarding patience and observation over brute force.
Codename 47 laid the foundation for a long-running franchise that grew far more refined and open in its later entries. The original is available digitally and stands as a rough but historically important starting point for the World of Assassination.
