Manhunt is a 2003 stealth game developed by Rockstar North, casting players as death-row convict James Earl Cash, who is granted a false reprieve only to be forced to kill his way through a snuff-film director's twisted gauntlet of hunter gangs. It pushed stealth toward grim, violent horror.

Gameplay hinged on lurking in shadows and executing enemies with escalating brutality, with the severity of each kill determined by how long the player waited to strike, all captured by the director's cameras. Managing noise to lure or evade hunters, and using improvised weapons, drove the tense cat-and-mouse structure.
