Primal Rage
Primal Rage is a 1994 fighting game developed by Atari Games, set on a post-apocalyptic Earth called Urth where giant dinosaurs and monstrous apes battle for dominance as worshipped gods. Players chose from creatures like the tyrannosaur Sauron, the great ape Blizzard and the raptor-like Talon.
The game used stop-motion clay models digitized into sprites, giving it a distinctive, tactile look reminiscent of Mortal Kombat's digitized style, and its combat featured gruesome fatalities and the ability to devour the tiny worshippers gathered at the arena edges for health. Controls, which held a button then pressed a direction, gave it an unusual feel that became part of its identity and its challenge.
A memorable arcade curiosity that was ported to many home systems and spawned merchandise, Primal Rage endures as a nostalgic cult favorite, occasionally resurfacing in retro collections and digital re-releases for the curious.
